Estimation of lipid content in Black-Pied dairy cows with body condition score method

Abstract

Body condition score of 49 adult dairy cows of the Black-Pied type, lactating or dry, has been evaluated in 0-5 scale, by 1 or 2 assessors, after observation or observation and handling. After slaughtering, the body composition of the cows was measured or estimated. Change of 1 unit in condition score was accompanied by variations of 3.9 points % in the percentage of lipids in the liveweight, of 35 kg in the liveweight, of 28 kg in the body lipids. Scores of the 2 assessors were strongly correlated (r ≥ 0.96). Scores after observation and scores after observation and handling were also highly correlated (r = 0.97).
