Lean genotypes in poultry production

Abstract

Until now genetic selection of poultry species has been performed using only the growth rate as a criterion. However this has led to production of increasing rattier birds. Adiposity or leanness are genetic parameters exhibiting high heritability. allowing efficient selection. Several experimental selections have been undertaken using feed efficiency, plasma very-low density lipoproteins or abdominal proportion measured on sibs as criteria. Very lean birds were obtained easily. They all exhibited better feed efficiency, better protein utilisation, higher carcass yield and muscle proportion. Developing this kind of selection on commercial strains could lead to significant progress in the poultry industry.
