Foreword to the dossier "Stem cells and organoids: realities and prospects"

Abstract

Stem cells and organoids, simplified versions of organs, are biological tools that are enabling major advances in biology and medicine and are raising many hopes while reducing the need for animal experiments. This dossier reviews the latest developments in organoid models for agronomic research, and also looks at the technological challenges and applications involved. These alternative, substitute or complementary methods to animal experimentation offer new research perspectives that are difficult, if not impossible, to envisage using animals. In the long term, they should make it possible to significantly reduce the number of animals used in research, thereby meeting regulatory requirements and societal expectations.
