Feeding and weaning in heifer rearing

Abstract

In order to determine and to recommend the most efficient use of milk and concentrate, 137 new-born Holstein heifers received different daily milk replacer quantities (770 to 1320 g/d) and were weaned at various ages (9 to 16 weeks) with different quantities of concentrate (1.5 to 3 kg/d). Increased daily milk replacer feeding decreased solid intake (particularly concentrate). But live-weight gain increased especially when heifers were less than 6 weeks old. Feeding 1 kg/d milk replacer before weaning and 2 kg/d of concentrate after weaning gives a constant live-weight gain. After 6 weeks of age, 1 kg/d of milk replacer or 2 kg/d of concentrate feeding gives similar live-weight gains. In good rearing conditions, an 8 weeks weaning system with 45 kg of milk replacer allows a regular live-weight gain (800-900 g/d) from birth to 4 months of age.
