Feeding weaned calves with wheat grain

Abstract

Early weaned calves (heifers and bulls) have received wheat grain at weaning. Three mecanical treatments were applied : 1 - 5 mm pelleting after 3 mm grinding, 2 - 8 mm grinding, 3 - rolling. They have no effects on heifers performances but coarse grinding increase feed intake. Sodium bicarbonate addition (10 g/kg of 8 mm ground wheat) increase heifers live-weight gain after weaning. Comparatively to commercial products (pelleted or flaked), rolled wheat (with soja meal and minerals) reduced intake but had no effect on live-weight gains of bulls. These results are discussed according to sanitary problems.
