Dairy cattle production in humid tropical areas. Variations of milk yield and reproductive performance in a dairy cattle herd in Guadeloupe (French West Indies)

Abstract

Milk yield and reproductive performance of a dairy cattle herd located in Guadeloupe (French West Indies) have been analysed over the 1971- 1983 period. Average milk yields of Friesian females reach 3 425 kg over a 302 days lactation length. The conception rate is 39 %, the calving interval 393 days and the number of services per conception 1.96. Seasonal effects are important, especially for ferlility. The conception rate is nearly 20 percentage points lower for the september-october period as compared with the dry season (from january to april). Milk yield and lactation peaks are also higher during the dry season, which is the most favourable calving period. Annual variations are also important difficult to control. Improvements can be obtained through a better management of feed resources and the use of techniques which limit the heat stress of females.
