Poultry genetics : new criteria and new methods

Abstract

Genetics is responsible for a large proportion of thedramatic increase in poultry production, partly thanksto biological characteristics of poultry species whichare particularly favourable to selection. Today, therequests of the consumers and of the breeders lead thegeneticist to study new traits such as quality of products, resistance to diseases (whether infectious ornot), reduction of effluents, animal welfare…In parallel, methods are improving thus allowing a better modelisationof traits and of genetic effects but also anintegration of results of molecular information. Thewhole could make it possible to select for new criteriabut also to renew the study of already selected traitssuch as growth or laying intensity.
