Structures of beef production from suckler herds in French Charolais area

Abstract

The suckler herds can produce several types of animals for sale, with or without a finishing period. Selection of a type of production has to take into account both the moving market and the possibilities of forage productions on the farm. In grass-land areas, as in central Charolais area, all types of production are not equally adapted. This is illustrated by the comparative analysis of three samples of "suckler farms" from a group of beef producers in the North East of Creuse that were selected for their different types of production of male calves after weaning. Born in winter, animals can be sold as weaned calves (8 to 12 m), or as beef bulls for slaughter at 16-18 m after indoor fattening right from weaning, or at 20 or 24 m after indoor fattening following a growth period on grass. Up to now, the best net income was obtained with the latters, because they make the most of grassland and of the potentialities of the Charolais breed (sufficient intake capacity with roughage and grass, and high capacity for muscle growth). But this type of production requires high technical and economical abilities from farmers. Will the changing economical conditions allows the fattening of young bulls to be maintained in "suckler regions" with the competition from more favourable areas ?
