Voluntary feed intake in the lactating sow : factors of variation

Abstract
Voluntary feed intake in the lactating sow is often too low to satify the hight nutritionnal needs, this having adverse effects on the following reproductive performances. Review of the litterature shows that daily feed consumption during lactation is affected by different factors including : lactation stage, parity number, genotype, size of the litter, energy and protein content of the diet, temperature of the farrowing house and pregnancy feeding level. When possible the effects of these different factors have been quantified. Some animals look particulary sensitive to low feed intake problems, for example gilts farrowing in summer and having received a liberal feeding during previous pregnancy.
