Emerging diseases : a challenge for development of sustainable animal productions
Abstract
This paper first displays the global framework for thestudy of emerging diseases aimed at disease control, sanitary crises avoidance and promotion of sustainableagriculture. Then, the research programmes, stages, methods and tools that are needed for emerging diseasestudy and control are presented. These are either alreadyavailable, under development or awaiting for researchstudies. They mainly concern information systems, biomathematics, epidemiological methods and molecularbiology markers. Finally, some of the main organisationalprinciples (synergies between health protagonists:veterinarians, herdsmen, researchers, healthmanagers, local authorities) are introduced. Theseprinciples have to be satisfied if we want to reach anefficient vigilance towards potentially emergingdiseases and to take up the challenge that is facing animalpopulations and human societies en route for globalisation.
