Economy and prospects of the horse sector in France

Abstract

The production and uses of horses in France have their roots in history and agriculture. Horses have, however, gained a new status and have become the medium of a complex and developing economical branch.

With nearly 100 000 mares, horse breeding shows a great diversity, regarding breeds as well as geography. The development and marketing networks vary according to the different uses : races, equestrian sports and leisure, and draught. Races are the basis for bets generating a turnover of more than 6.4 thousand million euros.

A new horse policy has begun, which includes more harmonious and favourable measures and remodelled partnerships, making France one of the first equestrian nations of the world.
