Different ways to valorise local breeds and management of animal genetic resources

Abstract

Animal genetic resources can be involved in valorisation with strong stakes and consequences on resource management. In this paper we show that it is necessary to take into account the various ways to add value to local breeds, for instance products without PDO (see the Bretonne Pie Noir breed case) or landscape management (see the Solognote breed case). Indeed, the results of research concerning interactions between local breed management and PDO products show different consequences of such projects on local breeds but we show that other ways of adding value must be considered (food products, without PDO, specific livestock farming system, landscape management, non food products etc.). They must be considered in further research, by identifying the specificity involved.
